JackHammers Comeback Falls Short

KANSAS CITY, KS-The Joliet JackHammers (3-8) scored four runs over the final four innings to battle back from a 5-0 deficit, only to lose 5-4 to the Kansas City T-Bones (7-3) before 3,188 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Wednesday night.

The T-Bones began the scoring with four runs in the 2nd inning against Joliet starter Aaron Trolia (1-2). DH Jim Fasano (0-3) worked a leadoff walk and moved to third base on a double by 1B Ken Harvey (3-3). Fasanco scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 Kansas City.

Harvey moved to third base on the wild pitch and scored on a single by C Craig Hurba (2-3) for a 2-0 T-Bones advantage.

LF John Urick (2-4) followed with a two-run home run to make it 4-0.

The JackHammers started their comeback in the 6th inning. LF K.C. Herren (1-5) led off the inning with a single and was caught stealing at second base. C-RF Phil Avlas (1-2) worked a walk and was forced out at second base when 1B Freddie Thon (0-4) hit into a fielder's choice. RF Joey Gomes (2-3) hit an RBI triple to score Thon and get the JackHammers within three runs at 4-1.

Trolia pitched into the sixth inning and suffered the loss for the JackHammers. He allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings pitched. He walked one and struck out four men.

With the JackHammers down 5-1 in the 7th inning, SS Kevin Rios (1-4) led off the inning by popping out. 2B Johnny Washington (2-4) hit a double and moved to third on a groundout by DH Mike Garcia (0-4). CF Adam Klein (4-5) hit an RBI single to score Washington and make it 5-2 Kansas City.

The JackHammers scored two runs in the 8th inning. Avlas led off the inning by hitting a solo home run over the left field wall. After Thon and C Tug Gillingham (0-1) grounded out, 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-2) hit a double and scored on a single by Rios to make it 5-4.

Loose Gravel: Gomes left the game in the 6th inning after sliding into third base on his triple. Gillingham came into the game to pinch-run for him and batted in his slot in the Joliet lineup. Gillingham caught the final three innings of the game while Avlas went to right field.

The JackHammers and T-Bones wrap up their three-game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Brad Mumma (1-1, 4.50) gets the start for the JackHammers against LHP Luis Villarreal (0-0, 3.00) for the T-Bones.
