August 27, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Having just swept the Quad Cities River Bandits, the Cedar Rapids Kernels brought their hot bats to Clinton on Friday night for a battler between the top two teams in the Western Division. The LumberKings took an early lead, but the Kernels would respond and not look back, downing Clinton 9-5. The loss snapped a 12 game home winning streak dating back to July 29th.
Chris Mariscal had not homered since April 17th at Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids, but picked a good time to launch his second home run of the season. The LumberKings leadoff man swung at the first pitch he saw from Kernels starter Tyler Beardsley (1-2) and drove it into the Lumber Lounge, making it an early one run LumberKings lead.
The lead wouldn't last long, as the Kernels got to LumberKings starter Luiz Gohara (4-2) in the second. Travis Blankenhorn doubled to left center with one out, and went to third on a bloop single that followed from Nelson Molina. J.J. Fernandez then cleared the bases with a double into the left field corner, giving the Kernels a 2-1 lead, but was thrown out trying to go to third.
The LumberKings responded in the bottom of the second as Conner Hale singled with one out and James Alfonso popped a double down the right field line, moving Hale to third. Ivan Gonzalez then flew out to right, scoring Hale to tie the game.
Cedar Rapids got right back to work in the third, as Casey Scoggins reached to start the inning on a fielding error from Rayder Ascanio. Scoggins was replaced at first by Manuel Guzman, who grounded into a fielders choice. Luis Arraez then singled to center on a hit and run, moving Guzman to third. Guzman would score on a ground out to first from Zander Wiel, giving the Kernels the lead back at 3-2.
The score would remain 3-2 until the fifth, when Zander Wiel worked a ten pitch at bat against Luiz Gohara. However, the tenth pitch of the at bat Wiel blasted over the left field wall for his 15th home run of the year. Gohara would surrender a single to Travis Blankenhorn, and that would end his night.
The Kernels would add runs in the seventh and the eighth, extending the lead to 8-2, but the LumberKings would put three on the board in the bottom of the eighth, courtesy of an infield single from Logan Taylor that scored two on a throwing error from third baseman Nelson Molina. Alex Jackson then followed with a single to right that scored Taylor, making it 8-5 Kernels.
In the ninth, second baseman Chris Mariscal came into pitch and only allowed a solo home run to Jaylin Davis. Mariscal is the first Clinton player to have homered and pitched in the same game since Trevor Wilson did it in 1987.
The LumberKings look to snap their current three game losing streak tomorrow night as they send Nick Neidert (7-2, 2.42) to the hill against the Kernels' Sam Gibbons (6-5, 4.88). First pitch is at 6:30 PM tomorrow night. Tomorrow is Cy-Hawk Night, with a postgame concert to follow from The Cal Stage Band.
