
Kernels fall to Wizards, 10-7

The Cedar Rapids Kernels fell to the Fort Wayne Wizards, 10-7, on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 5,451 at Memorial Stadium in Fort Wayne. Matt Sweeney was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and a triple and Brian Walker extended his hitting streak to nine games, going 1 for 2 with a double and 2 RBI.
Kernels starter Trevor Bell allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out four over four innings in a no-decision effort. Felipe Arredondo (0-1) allowed three runs on two hits over 1.2 innings in relief of Bell to take the loss.
P.J. Phillips was 1 for 3 and stole his 20th base of the season as the Kernels failed to take advantage of three Fort Wayne errors.
Fort Wayne reliever Rolando Valdez (2-2) allowed a run on one hit to get the win and R.J. Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 16th save.
The loss drops the Kernels to 10-11 in the second half and 48-42 overall as Fort Wayne improves to 10-10 and 41-48 overall.
The four game series continues on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm as Jeremy Haynes starts for the Kernels against Stevie Delabar for Fort Wayne. The game can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com
