Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - The Cincinnati Reds claimed LHP Alexander Smit off waivers from the Minnesota Twins and have assigned the left hander to the Dayton Dragons. Smit will make his Dragons debut in a starting role on Sunday night when Dayton hosts the Clinton LumberKings in the third game of a four game series at Fifth Third Field. Smit was on the Twins 40 man roster and needed to clear waivers to be removed from the Minnesota's 40-man, but was instead claimed by the Reds.
A native of the Netherlands, Smit was pitching for the Twins organization at Fort Myers of the Florida State League, where he was 1-4 with one save and a 5.86 ERA in 18 games. In 2006, Smit put up outstanding numbers with the Beloit Snappers, posting a 7-2 record with a 2.99 ERA. The southpaw has had vast international experience pitching for his native Netherlands on the Dutch Junior National Team in 2001 and 2002. He also represented the Netherlands on the Dutch Olympic Team in the 2002 Intercontinental Cup in Cuba.
The Reds have also placed C Eddy Rodriguez on the temporarily inactive list. Rodriguez, a native of Cuba, is returning to his home in Miami, Florida to take his United States Citizenship Test. He is expected back with the Dragons before the club's current eight game home stand concludes on Friday.
The Dragons active roster remains at 25 players.
