Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - Quad Cities edged the Kernels 3-2 in a rain-shortened, complete game on Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park. The game was ruled complete in the bottom of the 5th inning after a one hour and 3 minute rain delay with the Bandits leading by a run.
Zach Borenstein gave the Kernels a 1-0 lead with a home run to center field in the 3rd inning. His 3rd of the season was a line shot that hit off batters-eye. Quad Cities took a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning. Anthony Garcia's RBI triple scored Stephen Piscotty, and then Garcia scored on a RBI single by Roberto De La Cruz.
The Kernels quickly tied the game 2-2 in the 5th inning. Alex Yarbrough walked to begin the frame. Andy Workman then chopped the ball to Bandits third baseman Stephen Piscotty, but his throw to 2nd base was off target and into right field. The throwing error allowed Yarbrough to get to 3rd base. Later in the inning, Gary Mitchell's RBI sacrifice fly to left field plated Yarbrough to tie the game.
The Bandits took the lead right back in the bottom of the 5th inning. Virgil Hill singled with one out and reached 3rd base on a single by Nick Martini. With runners at the corners and one out, Kernels starting pitcher was charged with a balk, allowing Hill to score and give Quad Cities a 3-2 lead.
Moments later, with Colin Walsh at the plate and Nick Martini standing at 2nd base rain started to fall, and the tarp was put on the field. Dan Reynolds (0-3) went 4.1 innings and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out five and walking two.
Hector Hernandez (5-4) was the winning pitcher for Quad Cities. He went five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking one.
The Kernels conclude the series at Quad Cities on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. The team returns home on July 4 at 5:05 p.m. vs. Wisconsin!
