West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps lost a series for just the second time in their last nine tries, unable to overcome an early deficit and dropping the rubber match of the three-game set, 7-4, to the Lake County Captains on Saturday night at Classic Park.
West Michigan (5-4, 41-38) committed eight errors during the three-game series, including a pair of miscues in the bottom of the eighth inning on Saturday that allowed Lake County (5-4, 36-42) to score two key insurance runs and put the game away.
Jose Ramirez led the Captains with a 5-for-5 game out of the leadoff spot, while Alex Monsalve went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
Monsalve's two-run homer in the first inning staked Lake County to a 3-1 lead, forcing the Whitecaps to play catch-up the rest of the way. Zach Maggard was 2-for-4 with a homer while Aaron Westlake and Chad Wright extended their hitting streaks to nine and seven games, respectively, as West Michigan pulled to within 5-4 by the sixth inning.
That score remained until a series of blunders in the eighth inning stymied the Whitecaps' comeback bid.
In the top of the eighth, Edgar Corcino singled with one out to put the potential game-tying run on base. He lost track of the situation and was running on contact as Westlake popped out on the infield, making himself an easy out at first as Lake County doubled him up to end the inning.
In the bottom of the frame, the Captains' Jordan Casas advanced into scoring position when his leadoff single was coupled with a throwing error. Ramirez's fifth base hit of the night put runners at the corners, and Francisco Lindor followed with a hot smash right at the first baseman.
But the ball caromed off Westlake for another error and ricocheted into right-center field, allowing both runners to circle the bases as Lake County seized a 7-4 cushion.
The Whitecaps went down quietly in the ninth as Jeff Johnson (12) earned the six-out save, wrapping up a win for middle reliever Antwonie Hubbard (1-0).
Marcelo Carreno (3-5) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over four innings to snap a personal three-game winning streak.
The Whitecaps continue a six-game road trip at 7:05 p.m. on Sunday night with the opener of a three-game series against the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond. RHP Jeff Ferrell (2-2, 4.56) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Gustavo Gomez (5-6, 5.02) of Great Lakes. The Whitecaps' next home game will take place on Wednesday, July 4, at 7:00 p.m. with a visit from the ZOOperstars and Independence Day fireworks. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
