Kelowna Rockets News Release
The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Kamloops Blazers 6-4 on Tuesday night at Prospera Place in WHL preseason action.
After some back and forth play, both teams were held scoreless through the first period.
It didn't take long to end the drought as just 2:12 into the middle frame Liam Kindree broke the stalemate with an assist going to Erik Gardiner. Just over 30 seconds later the Blazers responded as Erik Miller got his team on the board. Leif Mattson replied for the Rockets potting an unassisted shorthanded marker. Then Gordie Ballhorn put his name in the goal column slipping a point shot past the Blazers goaltender to pull the Rockets ahead by two. Kaedan Korczak and Conner Bruggen-Cate collected assists on that one. Ted Brennan added one more for Kelowna before the period was out, cleaning up a loose puck in front of the net, assisted by Colum McGauley and Will Kushniryk. Kelowna took a 4-1 lead into the final stanza.
It took until midway through the third period but Kamloops stopped the bleeding as Jackson Shepard made it 4-2. Just over a minute later Scott Mahovlich brought the Blazers back within one. James Hilsendager restored the two goal advantage for the Rockets on the power play with a bomb of a slap shot from the point with assists going to Jack Cowell and Kyle Topping. Dallon Wilton added one more for the Rockets with Ted Brennan collecting his second point of the night on the assist. James Shepard notched his second of the night for Kamloops before time expired, but it wouldn't matter as Kelowna takes it 6-4.
Brodan Salmond and James Porter split the game with Salmond turning aside 17 of the 18 shots he faced, and Porter stopping 19 of 22.
Kelowna advances to 1-0-1-0 thus far in the preseason.
The Rockets are back at it on Friday night, September 8th, when they host the Kamloops Blazers once again at Prospera Place. Puck drop is at 7:05pm.
