
Kelly Cup In Toledo This Weekend

(Toledo, Ohio) The Kelly Cup, which has become the trophy that signifies the best at the Double âA' Level, will be on display at the Toledo Sports Arena on Friday night against Trenton and Saturday night against the Greenville Grrrowl. Patrick J. Kelly, the Commissioner Emeritus of the ECHL and the man for whom the Kelly Cup is named, along with Henry Brabham will be on hand Saturday night.
Twice the Toledo Storm has won the ECHL championships (1993 and 1994) when the winner received the Riley Cup. The Kelly Cup has been awarded to the ECHL postseason Champion since 1997. The Third-Annual Kelly Cup Tour is making its seventh stop on a 50-day tour of ECHL cities that will span 10,339 miles.
Patrick J. Kelly served as Commissioner of the ECHL for its first eight seasons prior to becoming Commissioner Emeritus following the 1995-96 season. Before becoming a commissioner, Patrick was a coach of many levels of hockey. Most notably he coached the Colorado Rockies of the National Hockey League, where he led the Rockies to their only Stanley Cup Playoff appearance.
Henry Brabham, a founding member of the ECHL, is a former mayor and businessman who owned three of the first five ECHL teams (Johnstown, Erie, and Virginia). The Brabham Cup was named after Henry Brabham and has been given to the Regular Season Champion since the inaugural season of 1988-89. Toledo has won the Brabham Cup twice in its history (1991-92 and 2002-03).
