Spokane Shock News Release
The Spokane Shock announced today that DB Rob Keefe has signed an AFL contract to join the Philadelphia Soul. Former Shock OL Brandon Leyritz, who played in nine games last season, signed an AFL contract to join the Cleveland Gladiators. In other Shock news, the Shock added WR added Daniel Smith to their roster for the 2008 season.
Smith, 6-0 200, finished his collegiate career at Idaho State University when he declared himself eligible for the NFL draft after his junior season. Smith signed a free-agent contract with the Carolina Panthers but was released during training camp. As a junior at Idaho, he ranked 12th in the nation in yards receiving per game (100.1) and 18th in receptions per game (6.7). That season he also led the team in receptions with 67 for over 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in 10 games, earning second-team All-Western Conference honors.
"We have every reason to believe that DJ will excel in the indoor game as much as he did in the outdoor game," Shackleford said. "Anytime we can add NFL-caliber talent to our roster, it means we are getting better as a football team."
Former Shock DS Keefe was one of seven players from the 2006 ArenaCup championship team to re-sign with the Shock for the 2007 Western Division title season.
In 2006, his third in the af2, Keefe had a break-out season starting in all 19 games (regular and post-season) and recorded 97.5 total tackles, 11 interceptions (ranked second in the af2) and 15 pass break-ups. During the 2007 season, Keefe finished first on the team in interceptions (9 - returned for 100 yards and tied for fifth in the league) and added 81.5 tackles.
These outstanding numbers earned Keefe a spot on the all af2 for the second consecutive season.
"No one deserves this opportunity more then Rob Keefe," Head Coach Adam Shackleford said. "He's a great player and an even better person. This is one of my proudest moments in my coaching career."
