Keane named winner of AHL's Fred T. Hunt Award

The Manitoba Moose, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, are pleased to announce captain Mike Keane has been named the 2006-07 winner of the Fred T. Hunt Award as the AHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, determination, and dedication to hockey.

The award is voted upon by players and members of the media in each of the league's 27 cities.

Keane, 39, is in his second season as captain of the Moose. So, far, the Winnipeg, MB native has appeared in 73 games where he's scored eight goals and 17 assists for 25 points and 46 penalty minutes. Earlier this season, Keane was selected as the captain of the Canadian team at the 2007 Rbk Hockey AHL All-Star Classic in Toronto, ON. In his first season with this Moose last year, Keane scored three goals and 14 points in 69 games and was named co-winner of the team's Julian Klymkiw Award for community service.

In his 19-year pro career, Keane has won three Stanley Cups (Montreal '93, Colorado '96, Dallas '99) and played in 1,230 NHL games where he's scored 171 goals and 484 points as well as 947 penalty minutes. He has seen action in 220 career AHL games where he's scored 36 goals and 107 points and collected 182 penalty minutes. Prior to joining the Moose last season, Keane last appeared in the American Hockey League with the Sherbrooke Canadiens back in the 1987-88 season. He made his professional debut with the Canadiens in 1987 and helped them advance to the Calder Cup Final.

Keane is the perfect example of player dedicating himself to the game as he has led the Moose to their first-ever North Division crown and second consecutive 100-point season by making the sacrifices both physically and mentally to be consumate leader.

This award, which was first presented by the AHL in 1978, honors the late Fred T. Hunt, a long-time contributor to the league who won three Calder Cup championships as a player and three more as a general manager. Previous winners of the award include Ross Yates (1983), Glenn Merkosky (1987, '91), Bruce Boudreau (1988), Murray Eaves ('89, '90), John Anderson (1992), Ken Gernander (1996, 2004), Randy Cunneyworth (2000), Nathan Dempsey (2002), Eric Healey (2003), Chris Ferraro (2003) and Mark Cullen (2006).
