Elmira Pioneers News Release
Thursday, August 29, 2002 - Bicentennial Park, Allentown, Penn.
Horseheads native Greg Keagle won his 5th start in a row in a 5-0 victory at the Allentown Ambassadors Thursday night. Elmira extended their season's longest win streak to 9 straight in a win that is believed to have been the potential clincher for a post-season berth.
It has not been officially confirmed yet whether the Pioneers are officially in the playoffs because there is an unlikely scenario in which Elmira could finish tied with Adirondack for the wild-card while Adirondack is tied with Albany in their division race. But it is believed Elmira would be in the playoffs even in this scenario while Adirondack and Albany duke it out in a 1-game playoff for the division race.
Keagle allowed just 2 hits and struck out 11 batters in 8 masterful innings. Keagle has allowed jsut 2 runs in his last 4 starts coursing 34ip. it was his 2nd straight game in which he lasted 8 innings and allowed only 2 hits. He has thrown 16 straight shutout innings in his last 2 starts with a total of 25 K's allowing just 4 hits. Keagle (10-9) has won 5 straight and 6 of his last 7 starts. Prior to his hot streak, the former Detroit Tiger had gone 1-8 over a dismal 2-month stretch.
The only hits against Keagle came in the 4th and the 7th innings and accounted for the only Ambassadors base-runners of the night. Schuyler Doakes got on with a bunt single leading off the 4th inning. Despite a wide throw by Keagle that would have gotten Doakes, the play was ruled a hit. The lone clean Allentown hit of the night was in the 7th on a lead-off single to RF by Josh Carter.
Donnie Thomas retired the side in order in the 9th inning as Elmira faced only 2 more batters then the minumum of 27.
Brian Jones sparked the offense with 3 RBI's including a 2-run HR (his 11th). Osmani Garcia went 4-for-4 with 3 doubles.
Chris Zallie (2-5) took the tough loss for the Ambassadors in their home finale scattering 11 hits allowing 5 runs, 2 earned in a complete game perofrmance.
The Pioneers have won 52 games this season eclipsing their total of a year ago of 51. The Ambassadors fell to 24-62, equaling the Berkshire Black Bears for the most ever losses in the league.
Elmira score 3 runs in the 2nd and 2 runs in the 3rd to provide Keagle with all the offense he would need.
Michael Coleman started the 2nd inning rally by beating out an infield single. Pedro Quero looped a hit barely fair down the RF line advancing Coleman to 3rd. Brian Jones hit a Sac-Fly to LF scoring Coleman giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
Cesar King singled to RF and Quero was able to score when the ball got past RF Schuyler Doakes for an error. Osmani Garcia doubled into the Lf corner to plate King from 2nd to put Elmira on top 3-0 in the 2nd.
In the 3rd inning Pedro Quero reached on a dropped fly-ball with 2 outs by RF Schuyler doakes. Brian Jones then launched a 2-run HRE high over the RF screen to stretch the lead to 5-0.
The top 3 hitters for the Pioneers (Pernell, Bush and Terhune) went a combined 0-for-15 while the 4-through-9 batters acccounted for all 11 hits. It was the 10th straight game for Elmira with 10 or more base-hits.
