Kaplan Scores Winner in Ninth

Led by Jonny Kaplan the Calgary Vipers (45-25) defeated the Chico Outlaws (37-39) 4-3 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Kaplan finished the game with a home run and two triples while also scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Calgary gave up two runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at three and setting up the heroics in the final at-bats. On the mound Mike Burns (5-1) was terrific out of the bullpen for the win allowing one hit in three scoreless innings while recording five strikeouts. With the win the Vipers increased their lead atop the North Division to two games.

Chico opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Danny Gonzalez doubled and after advancing to third base he scored on a Bobby Hill run batted in grounder for a 1-0 lead.

Calgary quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first when Jonny Kaplan went deep for his fourth home run of the season.

The Vipers took the lead in the fifth frame as Drew Miller doubled, advanced to third base on a Jeff Giacomini groundout, and scored on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt from Stephen Whalen for a RBI and a 2-1 advantage.

Calgary increased their lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning when with two outs Chad Ehrnsberger singled and Lino Garcia doubled him home for a RBI.

The Outlaws tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh as Brian McFall singled, Adam Buchini reached on a fielding error by Ehrnsberger, Matt Hibbert was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Jay Pecci collected a RBI on a fielder's choice while a second run also scored on a throwing error by Wilver Perez.

In the bottom of the ninth the Vipers walked off with a 4-3 win when Kaplan and Perez walked while Jimmy Rohan reached on a fielder's choice which also allowed Kaplan to score all the way for second base.

This series in Calgary at Foothills Stadium against the Chico Outlaws continues on Monday August 15th at 6:30 with a make-up game for an earlier postponed game. The two teams will also play on Toonie Tuesday August 16th at 6:30 and Weiner Wednesday August 17th for $5.00 Student Night.

The Vipers welcome the Yuma Scorpions to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Thursday August 18th at 6:30 with Dan the One Man Band Performing and on Friday August 19th at 6:30 for GLEE Night. Jose Canseco will join the Scorpions on Saturday August 20th at 5:05 PM for Serve and Protect Day along with Baseball Bonanza while before the game Heartland will take on Hell on Wheels in a Celebrity Softball Game benefiting Slave Lake. On Sunday August 21st the series will wrap up with Fan Appreciation Day at 1:35 including a Celebrity Home Run Derby before the game featuring Canseco, Theo Fleury, and Charlie Simmer.
