Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - Behind a dominant outing from Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings starting pitcher David Cross, the WhiteWings defeated the McAllen Thunder 8-3 at Harlingen Field on Sunday night.
Cross (3-5, 7.89 ERA) didn't allow any runs while striking out nine batters and giving up just four hits through six innings as he picked up his first win as a WhiteWing this year.
The WhiteWings (45-31) move 14 games above .500 for the first time this season as they take the series from the Thunder (31-46), winning three of four.
Grabbing the lead in the first inning, David Peralta and Leivi Ventura hit back-to-back singles before Edgar Trejo hit a line drive down the third base line to score both runners as the WhiteWings took an early 2-0 lead.
In the second, the WhiteWings brought home two more runs to take a 4-0 advantage. Wilmer Pino hit an infield single to score a run as an error on the throw to first brought home another.
Those were all the runs the WhiteWings needed as Cross did not allow a run to score on his watch.
After the WhiteWings scored three in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 7-0, the Thunder got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning, producing three runs off of relief pitcher Luis Chirinos, but it was too little too late as the WhiteWings notched their 45th victory of the year.
The WhiteWings are back in action on Tuesday when they start a four-game series against the Edinburg Roadrunners at Harlingen Field.
