Kalamazoo's Martin named Rookie of the Month

LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO--- The United Hockey League (UHL) announced Thursday that Kalamazoo Wings goaltender Joel Martin has been named Easton UHL Rookie of the Month for November.

Martin completed the month with a perfect 8-0-0 record, a 1.25 goals against average (GAA), a .957 save percentage (SPCT), and two shutouts. He stopped all 29 Rockford shots on November 16th to earn his first shutout of the season. On November 30th, he turned away all 34 Danbury shots to earn his league leading second shutout. The 23-year-old native of Three Hills, Alberta made more than 20 saves in each game he played and twice made more than 30. Martin did not allow more than two goals in each of his eight appearances. He currently leads all UHL goaltenders with a .957 SPCT. His 1.22 GAA also leads all UHL netminders as he is the only goaltender with a GAA under 2.00. His nine wins this season also tie him for the league lead. Martin has made 251 saves in 540 minutes of play this season and was also named UHL Goaltender of the Month for November.

Other players nominated for the Easton UHL Rookie of the Month include: Adirondack forward Mark Hurtubise, Danbury forward Alex Goupil, Elmira center Chris Chaput, Flint forward Fabien Laniel, Fort Wayne left wing Michael Wiggins, Missouri goaltender Brenden Cuthbert, Motor City forward Peter Szabo, Muskegon left wing Ryan Keller, Port Huron forward Blake Stewart, Quad City forward Anthony Blumer, Richmond goaltender Doug Groenestege, Roanoke defenseman Alex Jerofegevs, and Rockford center Yannick Tifu.

The 2005-06 season is the first year that the Easton UHL Rookie of the Month is being awarded. It recognizes the performance of players who have played in 60 or fewer professional games and goaltenders who have played 3,600 or fewer professional minutes prior to this season.
