Game Rewind
Down three-games to two and facing elimination, the K-Wings returned home to battle the Rockford IceHogs in Game Six of the Colonial Cup Finals. Derek Ryan (4) propelled the K-Wings ahead 1-0 with a wrist shot from the slot 6:06 into the opening period. Ten seconds after the K-Wings jumped ahead, IceHog forward Chaz Johnson (6) answered back with a blast from the right circle. Kalamazoo moved back in front midway through the period when Tyler Willis found Nick Bootland (11) near the crease for a deflection that beat Rockford's Frederic Cloutier. Kevin Ulanski (7) knotted the contest back at 2-2 with a goal 21 seconds into the second stanza. The K-Wings regained the lead after a one-timer from Jeff Brown (2) at 8:48 into the period, which later proved to be the game-winner. After a brilliant piece of goaltending by Ryan Nie, stopping an IceHogs power play scoring opportunity, the K-Wings went the down the ice and created a two-on-one. Forward Lucas Drake (6) faked a pass to Glenn Detulleo and sent a shot over the shoulder of Cloutier, scoring shorthanded, lifting Kalamazoo to a 4-2. Kory Karlander (14,15) put the contest out of reach in the third period finding the net twice en route to a 6-2 victory for Kalamazoo. The victory evened up the series at three-games a piece and forced a decisive Game Seven.
In a winner takes all showdown, Kalamazoo traveled to Rockford on Thursday (5/24) for Game Seven of the Colonial Cup Finals. Killing off a penalty, Ulanski (8) capitalized off a K-Wings turnover and scored shorthanded 2:43 into the game. Midway through the opening period, Kalamazoo executed on the power-play, when Willis found Bootland for his 12th of the playoffs to knot the contest at 1-1. In the second period, Jason Nottermann (5) battled in front of the K-Wings net and tapped in his own rebound at the 6:11 mark to extend the IceHogs lead to 2-1. Rockford put the contest away with less than two minutes remaining in the third period with a goal from Nicolas Corbeil (9), which gave the IceHogs a 3-1 victory, which clinched their franchises fifth Colonial Cup and the first since moving to Rockford in 1999.
