Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
Despite getting out-hit by Dunedin, Jupiter strung enough offense together in the middle innings to come out on top of a 2-1 pitchers' duel in the series finale.
Five of Jupiter's seven hits came in the 5th and 6th innings, allowing the Hammerheads to break through against an otherwise brilliant Drew Hutchison. The Blue Jays starter struck out seven without issuing a walk in his six innings of work.
After the team got just one hit in the first four innings, Kyle Jensen led off the 5th with a single, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. With two outs, Ernesto Manzanillo doubled down the left field line, scoring Jensen with the game's first run.
The next frame saw the top of Jupiter's order knock out three straight singles to go up 2-0. Jose Duarte went from first-to-third on Chase Austin's second hit of the night and scored on Jeff Dominguez's base hit.
The Hammerheads staff more than held up its end of the night, matching Dunedin's totals with eight strikeouts and just one walk allowed. Jupiter's eight strikeouts were split evenly amongst four pitchers, including the return of starter Matt Montgomery.
Montgomery's last start came exactly one month earlier, ended by an ankle sprain that sent him to the disabled list. The right-hander returned looking every bit as sharp as the pitcher who entered the game with the league's ninth-lowest ERA and best walk rate.
In four innings of work, Montgomery gave up just two hits, striking out two and again refusing to issue a walk. The right-hander has given up either one or no walks in all but one of his 15 starts this year.
Relieving Montgomery in his return was the man who filled his spot in the rotation, Kyle Kaminska. Kaminska posted a 2.92 ERA with 23 strikeouts and just four walks in five starts while Montgomery was on the disabled list.
Kaminska sandwiched a bases loaded jam with a pair of 1-2-3 innings, escaping unscathed thanks to one of his two strikeouts. In the 8th, however, Dunedin's Ivan Contreras took the offense into his own hands, stealing both second and third after a leadoff single. That set him up to score on catcher A.J. Jimenez's third hit of the night.
Jose Rosario took over with one out in the 8th and struck out both batters he faced to hold the lead. All-Star closer A.J. Ramos got into a bit of trouble in the 9th, as his two strikeouts were preceded and followed by two more Dunedin singles. He then hit a batter to load the bases, but got a liner back to his third baseman to put the wraps on his 19th save of the season.
With the victory, the Hammerheads have equaled their win total from all of last season. This year's pitching staff has shaved nearly a run off last year's team ERA, leading the league with a 3.38 mark.
Jupiter now sets out to face Daytona in the final interdivision series of the year. Reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week Bryan Evans will try to extend his streak of 16 scoreless innings, facing off against former big leaguer Angel Guzman in the first of a four game series.
