Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER-FL-The Stone Crabs beat Jupiter 3-2 in 12 innings on Sunday afternoon. And then they did it again. With one of the most bizarre endings you will ever see, Charlotte came away with the series win.
With two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning and Jupiter trailing by a run, Ed Lucas hit a line drive to center field. Charlotte center fielder Andrew Toles dived to his left and appeared to trap the ball. The original call was that Lucas was out, and the game was over and the Stone Crabs began their celebratory handshake line.
As this was going on Jupiter manager Brian Schneider went out to argue the play. The umpires met and decided to reverse the call just as the Stone Crabs had finished their handshake line.
After an argument by Charlotte manager Jared Sandberg, his team went back on the field.
But even with a second chance the Hammerheads could not take advantage as Jose Molina got Cameron Flynn to end the game and the Stone Crabs celebrated with their second handshake line in a matter of minutes.
Not only was Toles involved in the wacky ending, he was the reason Charlotte came away with a win. With the game tied a two in the bottom of the 12th he hit a RBI single up the middle that scored Jake DePew who had reached on a lead off walk.
Charlotte almost won the game in the 11th if it wasn't for the clutch hitting of Viosergy Rosa. After the Stone Crabs had taken the lead in the top of the frame when Thomas Coyle scored on an error by Lucas, Jupiter rallied back.
With one out Colin Moran doubled then Rosa pulled a single into the right-center gap to tie the game at two.
Rosa also plated Jupiter's first run in with a single in the sixth inning to tie things at one. He finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with two RBI.
The Hammerheads had a great chance to win the game in regulation in the seventh inning. In that frame Blake Barber led off with a single and Ross Wilson followed with a perfect hit-and-run single through the right side of the infield as Barber went to third. Wilson would advance to second on the throw into the infield.
But with two runners in scoring position the Hammerheads could not get a run home as a pair of groundouts and a fly out ended the threat.
Not to be lost in Jupiter's longest game of the season was another fantastic start by Scott Lyman. Lyman scattered four hits in seven innings and allowed just one run on a sac fly in the fourth inning. It was only the second run he has allowed all year.
Lyman would get a no decision when he left with the game tied following the seventh inning although he posted his fifth quality start in five tries this season.
Chipper Smith was given the loss after he allowed the go-ahead run in the 12th. Molina picked up the win after blowing the save in the 11th inning.
The Hammerheads will stay at Roger Dean Stadium on Monday although they will be the road team as they face the Palm Beach Cardinals for the first game the 2014 Fins vs. Feathers series. Jacob Turner will be making his second rehab start for Jupiter in that contest. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
WP: Jose Molina (1-1)
LP: Chipper Smith (1-2)
