Mississippi Miracles News Release

Jackson, MS. Rev. Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D., co-owner of the Mississippi ABA basketball team and Chairman of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF) announced that the state is on track to become the 19th state to recognize Juneteenth, the "19th of June," as a state holiday. Introduced recently by Rep. Bryant Clark (D-Lexington), HB 1241, the Mississippi Juneteenth State Holiday Observance Bill, establishes Juneteenth National Freedom Day as a day of commemoration and recognition for America's 2nd Independence Day. Juneteenth commemorates the day when slaves in the last geographic area in American where slavery existed learned of their freedom.

"This will be another significant development in our campaign to establish Juneteenth as a National Holiday," states Rev. Myers. "As more states like Mississippi pass Juneteenth Holiday bills, we hope that President George Bush will finally establish Juneteenth as a National Holiday Observance by issuing a Presidential Proclamation in 2006."

Rev. Myers recently assumed ownership of the ABA team playing in Greenville, Mississippi. Head coach Sam Lacey, former NBA great, has put together a very competitive team and will be playing out the remainder of this season's schedule and preparing for next season.
