Bellingham Slam News Release

Bellingham, WA - The Bellingham Slam used double-digit scoring performances from six players to earn a 121-107 victory over the Tacoma Navigators in an American Basketball Association game Tuesday night at Whatcom Pavilion. A crowd of 920 excited fans, the largest for a Slam home game this season, were on hand to witness the action.

The Slam stormed out of the gate, scoring the first 17 points of the game before Tacoma finally broke the shutout with a three-pointer 5:28 into the game. The Slam dominated throughout the quarter to build a 34-12 first quarter lead.

Tacoma was able to regroup somewhat in the second quarter, as they played the Slam even through the quarter. But their poor performance in the first quarter still haunted them as they trailed 68-46 at halftime.

Navigators coach and former Seattle Sonic Vincent Askew was able to light a fire under his team at the break, as they outscored the Slam 40-24 in the quarter. Tacoma looked as if it would head to the fourth quarter trailing by just three, until Kevin Woodberry hit a hurried three-pointer at the buzzer to extend the Slam lead to six at 92-86.

The Slam came out strong in the fourth quarter, going on a 11-3 run in the first 2:44 of the quarter to run their lead to 14. Tacoma and Bellingham played back and fourth for the remainder of the game, and Kevin Woodberry capped the scoring and punctuated the victory with a thunderous dunk with 21 seconds left.

The Slam improved their record to 12-9 while the Navigators record fell to 8-5. The win was the Slam's first over the Navigators in four tries this season, with each of the previous three losses coming by a combined margin of 10 points.

The Slam and Navigators face off for a rematch on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Whatcom Pavilion. For more information, call the Slam at 734-SLAM or visit their website at www.bellinghamslam.com.
