New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Matt Newman's monster month of June continued on Saturday night as he stroked a key three-run double to help the Fisher Cats (36-44) win their fifth straight game, 6-2, over the New Britain Rock Cats (41-37). The victory matched a season high for consecutive wins and it sets the Fisher Cats up for a potential five-game sweep of New Britain on Sunday afternoon.
Newman's big hit was the insurance for the Fisher Cats, who found themselves down 2-0 entering the bottom of the third inning. In the third, they loaded the bases up with nobody out against Virgil Vasquez (L; 4-4). Dalton Pompey brought home the first run with a groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1. Jon Berti followed with a two-run single to put the Fisher Cats on top, 3-2.
That's how the game stayed into the seventh when Newman struck. Jorge Flores knocked Vasquez out with a one-out single. That brought on relief pitcher Ryan O'Rourke, who walked the first two men he faced on eight straight pitches. After his ninth was out of the strike zone, Newman took O'Rourke's tenth offering off the base of the center field wall to push three runs home for a 6-2 advantage.
The key hit extended Newman's hitting streak to a season-best seven games. In the month of June, Newman is hitting .311 (19-61) with 13 extra-base hits, including seven doubles. He is tied for the team lead in RBI's in June with 16 with Mike McDade. Sixteen of Newman's 19 runs batted in have come in the month.
Richard Bleier (W; 4-5) earned the win with 5.1 innings of work. He allowed five hits with one walk and a strikeout while being tagged with two unearned runs. Arik Sikula (H) and John Anderson (S) combined for 3.2 scoreless in relief to wrap up the win.
