Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (7-11) fell to the Birmingham Barons (5-13) by a 3-2 score in the fourth game of the five-game series at Regions Field on Tuesday night.
Jacksonville starting pitcher Mike Kickham (0-3) took the loss, giving up a pair of runs (one earned) on six hits with no walks and a season-high nine strikeouts in his six innings of work. Birmingham starting pitcher and White Sox No. 5 prospect Michael Kopech (1-1) earned his first Double-A victory. El'Hajj Muhammad allowed a pair of runs to the Shrimp in the ninth but he collected his second save of the season by preserving the Barons victory.
The game was scoreless until there were two outs in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on the corners, Kickham struck out Barons catcher Alfredo Gonzalez swinging, but the third strike was a wild pitch that scored Keon Barnum from third to give the Barons a 1-0 lead as Gonzalez reached first safely. During the next at-bat Gonzalez broke for second, and when the throw from catcher Austin Nola was missed by second baseman David Vidal, Mason Robbins scored from third on Vidal's error to make it 2-0 Birmingham.
The Barons added to their lead in the eighth inning with an RBI double by Nick Basto to put Birmingham's lead at 3-0 going to the ninth. David Vidal had a one-out single to get the Shrimp going in that inning, as his base hit extended his hitting streak to a season-best 11 games. Vidal later scored on an RBI single by Taylor Ard that put the score at 3-1. The next batter Austin Nola brought home Alex Glenn on an RBI groundout to third base for the second out of the inning, but that made it a 3-2 game. After Alex Yarbrough drew a walk from Muhammad, Isaac Galloway grounded out to second to end the game in a one-run Barons victory.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Barons will conclude their series with a decisive fifth game of the five-game set on Wednesday at Regions Field at 12 p.m. ET. Right-handed pitcher Chris Mazza (0-1, 2.37 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Birmingham right-hander Thaddius Lowry (1-1, 7.71 ERA). Fans can listen to the game on the Jumbo Shrimp Network presented by Community First, beginning at 11:45 a.m. ET with the pregame show "Shrimp On Deck" on the TuneIn Radio app, and www.jaxshrimp.com.
