NOT AN IDEAL START TO JULY - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats beat the Maine Red Snappers last night, 16-0 in Portland's biggest loss of the season. New Hampshire started scoring in the first inning after Rafael Lantigua singled and John Aiello doubled, putting two on for Spencer Horwitz, who cleared the bases with a double of his own. Trevor Schwecke singled, moving Horwitz to third, and Luis De Los Santos brought Horwitz home on a fielder's choice. Cam Eden knocked in the final run of the inning on an RBI single, giving the Fisher Cats a 4-0 lead. In the second, Horwitz and Schwecke collected one-out base hits. De Los Santos brought in the first run on a single and Zac Cook brought in the second with a second-straight base hit, bringing the score to 6-0. New Hampshire's offense erupted for five more runs in the top of the third. Horwitz brought in two runs on a double, while Schwecke collected another two-RBI hit. Cook drove in the last run of the inning on a single, ending the third with a 10-0 lead. In the seventh, Schwecke and De Los Santos drove in two runs each with doubles. Ryan Gold capped off another big inning with an RBI groundout, giving New Hampshire a 15-0 lead. They added one more run in the top of the eighth on a solo homer by Horwitz, increasing the deficit to 16-0. The Red Snappers went scoreless in the ninth, falling 16-0.

TYLER DEARDEN IS ON A STREAK - Tyler Dearden currently has the longest active streak of any Sea Dogs hitter. Dearden is riding an eight-game on-base streak that dates back to June 14. During that time, he is hitting .300 (9-for-30) with a double and two runs scored. He has also driven in five runs and has worked three walks. Dearden owns an on-base percentage of .364 during this streak.

WHERE DO WE STAND - Despite the loss last night, Portland is still in first place in the Northeast Division of the Eastern League. They currently share the top spot with the Hartford Yard Goats and the Reading Fightin Phils. The Binghamton Rumble Ponies, New Hampshire Fisher Cats and Somerset Patriots are all tied for last place in the division. The Sea Dogs will next face the Rumble Ponies in Binghamton after the series with New Hampshire.

BOOK IS CLOSED ON JUNE - The Sea Dogs finished the month of June 11-15, but 3-6 at Hadlock Field. As a team Portland was hitting .238 while holding opposing hitters to a .214 average. Portland blasted 22 homers and had a OBP of .324. Pedro Castellanos had the best month, hitting .358 with 10 doubles, one home run and nine RBI which earned him a promotion to AAA Worcester.

THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - July 2, 2008: Bubba Bell picked up a career-high 5 RBI in Portland's 11-5 win over the Thunder on Wednesday night. Bell smacked a 2-run double in the 4th inning and slammed a 3-run homer in the fifth. Jeff Corsaletti gave Portland an early lead with a 2-run homer in the first inning. Kyle Jackson worked 5 innings on seven hits and four runs to pick up his 2nd win as a starter.

PITCHING MATCHUP - LHP Jay Groome takes the mound for the Portland Sea Dogs tonight. In his last outing, he pitched with an opener for his second relief appearance of the season in Richmond. He tossed 3.1 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits while walking four and striking out five. Groome has faced the Fisher Cats once. He was given losing decision June 4th at New Hampshire and tossed 5.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits while walking four and striking out three. ‚¬Å
