Juice Sweep Joes
July 16, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release
Anderson entered Monday's doubleheader against Bradenton Juice with some unnerving numbers. For one, the Joes had only gone 1-5 in doubleheader games this season. Also, Bradenton had beaten Anderson eight straight times, dating back to June 5.
The numbers only grew worse Monday, as the Juice took game one, 6-2, and game two, 6-1, in front of 773 at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Lack of offense and an abundance of errors struck the Joes again, as Anderson managed only three runs and 10 hits between the 14 total innings of the two games. Defensively, the Joes committed eight total errors -- three in game one and five in game two, which matched a team and league record for most errors in one game.
Billy Hogan went a combined 3-for-5 with two runs in the two games. Heath Keel went 1-for-5, but hit a two-run homer in game one, increasing his team-leading totals in home runs and RBI to 10 and 33, respectively.
But the two-man crew for Anderson (2-6, 15-38 overall) was no match for the all-around effort from Bradenton (6-2, 30-22).
The Juice received a 4-for-6 combined effort from Julius Thames, who had three RBI and two runs. Luke Barganier went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs and two RBI between the two games. Al Corbeil and Mikela Olsen also delivered multi-RBI performances for Bradenton.
Starting pitching was an issue for the Joes, who got neither game one starter Pete Nickerson nor game two starter Dave Whitfield past the fourth inning in either game.
Then there were the eight total errors, which led to five unearned runs total.
The twin losses now make Anderson 1-7 in doubleheader games this season. Bradenton improved to 5-4 in such contests with the sweep. Also, the Juice have now beaten the Joes 10 straight times against just one loss, the third-best record of any one South Coast League team against another this season.
Anderson looks to snap its streak of futility against Bradenton in game three of their series tomorrow. Probable starters are Jan Granado for the Joes and Luke Palmer for the Juice.
First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
