Redfish Fall In Third Straight

Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Redfish hoped to get off their recent skid as they welcomed in a familiar face into to the Charlotte Sports Park, the Macon Music. The Redfish and the Music began a 3-game series with another late afternoon contest. The last time these teams faced off a week ago, it was a very intense series that featured two-extra inning games. Michael Oberg faced Macon for the second time but Redfish bats were held silent by Music starter Chris Ashman as the Music extended the Redfish drought to 3 games with a 7-2 loss.

With one out in the 1st inning, Travis Wiley and Dorian Rojas hit back-to-back singles and the Music had runners on the corners. After Rojas stole second base, Scott Robinson hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield scoring Wiley and the Music had a 1-0 lead. Ashman (1-1) got some defense early as Millard Dawson line drive, KJ Hendricks laid out to make a sensational play and it seemed that it might not be that kind of night. The next two batters felt otherwise as Jared Williams drag bunted his way to first and Jose Gutierrez bounced a single off the mound and up the middle. Billy Kovatch came through and plated Williams with a RBI single to tie the game at 1 at the end of the 1st inning.

Ashman didn't the Redfish get any closer for the rest of the night. Ashman kept the Redfish bats quiet and though Williams reached on a hit-by-pitch in the 3rd inning, Music catcher Kyle Donovan caught him trying to take second. The Music gave their starter some cushion in the 4th inning. With a runner on, Casey Garrison took an Oberg pitch over the left-field wall and the Macon had a 3-1 lead. Ashman set down the Redfish swinging in the bottom of the frame and the Redfish weren't able to muster a hit off him until the 5th inning.

On the other side, Oberg (1-3) wasn't fairing as well. Oberg was able to retire the leadoff hitter in every one of his 5.1 innings yet in all but two of those innings, the second hitter reached base. Scott Robinson, the second batter of the 6th inning, earned a walk and Casey Garrison took one for the team as he reached on a hit-by-pitch. Rick Simpson notched the Macon lead to 4-1 with a RBI single through the hole on the right side and Oberg's night was over. Oberg allowed 5 ER on 5 hits with 3 BB and 4 strikeouts as the Music had a 5-1 lead when the 6th inning was over.

One of the strongest innings for the Redfish defense was in the top of the 7th. After Travis Wiley reached on a passed ball after striking out and Rojas singled, the Redfish turned a perfect 6-4-3 double play to help out their reliver, Andy Polk. Polk pitched well as he allowed no runs, 1 hit, 2 BB and 2 strikeouts in his 2.1 innings. Other Redfish relievers weren't as fortunate as Mike Rigazio and Tommy Sutton combined to pitch 0.2 innings with 2 runs, 1 earned, on 2 hits and 2 walks. The only Redfish reliever to earn a strikeout was Froilan Ramirez in his 1.0 inning of work in the top of the 9th.

Ashman finished his night with only 1 ER on 5 hits in 7.0 innings. He didn't surrender a walk and fanned 10 Redfish batters. Macon added 2 more runs in the 8th inning and took a 7-1 lead. Jason Neufeld came on to pitch the bottom of the 9th inning as the Redfish tried to put together a late rally. The bases were walked loaded as Aaron Simmons was hit-by-pitch, Millard Dawson walked and Williams took one on the rear. Gutierrez drew another walk off Neufeld and the Redfish were down 7-2. With Billy Kovatch coming to plate, Music Manager Phil Plantier went to his bullpen and Cesar Herrera. Kovatch got good wood on the ball but the Charlotte Sports Park held it and the Redfish rally fell short.

The Redfish will look to even the series against the Music tomorrow night, July 16th. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. All Redfish games can be heard on 1070 AM WKII and online at www.redfishbaseball.com. For more information, check out www.redfishbaseball.com. Charlotte County Redfish Baseball - Reel in the Fun!
