Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints seized a 1-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference Finals on Sunday night when Jayden Jubenvill skated to the front of the net and beat Shikhabudtin Gadzhiev 4:48 into overtime.
The Saints led the game 3-1 heading into the third period, but Muskegon clawed back in the third with a pair of goals to force overtime. Early in the overtime frame, Matvei Gridin had a chance right in front of the Saints' net. The USHL's leading point-scorer in the regular season was stuffed by Kevin Reidler at the post, which allowed the Saints' chance at the other end of the ice.
After being named the Goaltender of the USHL Conference Semifinals, Reidler stopped 27 of 30 shots in Game 1 of the Conference Finals. Despite allowing as many goals as he allowed in the whole semifinals series, Reidler held Muskegon off the board on multiple quality chances in addition to Gridin's overtime chance.
Early in the second period, the Saints broke open the scoring with a pair of goals. Gavin Cornforth scored his first of the playoffs with a wrist shot past Gadzhiev at 3:26 before Fisher Scott knocked in a rebound at 5:42.
After Ty Henricks brought the Jacks back within one, the Saints fourth line forced a puck forward from the neutral zone. Andrew King tipped a puck ahead and Teddy Merrill banked it to himself into the offensive zone. Merrill cut toward the slot and let a shot fly that rocketed under the bar and gave the Saints their 3-1 lead.
In the third, Muskegon scored at 6:11 with a Cody Croal deflection to cut the Saints' lead to one. Then, at 12:30, Jack Galanek tied the game to force overtime.
Dubuque outshot the Jacks by one in the game, 31-30, with the one extra shot winning the game in overtime for the Saints. The teams played all 60 minutes and overtime without a penalty being called in Game 1.
Dubuque and Muskegon meet again on Monday night in Dubuque to play Game 2 of the Conference Finals.
