Pensacola Pelicans News Release

SportsTicker, the Central Baseball League's official statistician announced today they have selected Pelican's outfielder Juan Rocha as the Central Baseball League's Batter of the Week for June 20-26.

In seven games Rocha went 12-for-29 (.414) with 4 homeruns, 12 RBI, a slugging percentage of .862 and an on-base percentage of .485. Rocha scored one run in each of the seven games and hit one double while drawing four walks versus only three strikeouts.

Rocha's highlight games included a 3-for-4 performance versus Coastal Bend in which he hit a double and drove in two runs. Three days later he went 2-for-5 at Fort Worth with a homer and four RBI. During the seven game stretch Rocha raised his average from .269 to .292. He currently has 11 homeruns, second in the CBL, trailing only teammate Larry Bethea's 12. Rocha's 42 RBI are good for fourth in the league while his 54 hits are second on the team behind Nestor Smith's 58.

Rocha is no stranger to success. He has been a member of three championship teams and has had blockbuster seasons the past several years. Last season, with San Angelo and Shreveport, he led the CBL in homeruns with 21, was fourth in RBI with 72 and finished third in total bases with 175. The previous year with San Angelo Rocha hit .323 with 19 homeruns and 73 RBI, all of which were top five in the league. In addition he finished in the CBL top five in hits, extra base hits, runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and total bases. Prior to that his best season came in 1996 with Single-A Lansing, where he hit 14 homeruns and 83 RBI with 22 doubles, 8 triples and 15 stolen bases.

The Colombian native is in his 12th year of professional baseball after being selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 67th round of the 1994 MLB draft. Rocha, who last season led the CBL in homers with 20, collected his 1,000th career hit earlier this month and is four homeruns shy of 150 in his career.

Jason Wiedmeyer, left-handed pitcher for the San Angelo Colts, was selected as the CBL Pitcher of the Week. Wiedmeyer had two solid outings, one being a complete game against El Paso, limiting the Diablos to one run on three hits and striking out 11 in the Colts' 3-1 victory.
