June 27, 2005 - Central Baseball League (Central League) News Release
Pensacola OF Juan Rocha and San Angelo LHP Jason Wiedmeyer were selected by SportsTicker, the Central League's official statistician, as Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week of June 20-26.
In seven games, Rocha went 12-for-29, good for a .414 average, with four home runs, 12 RBI and a .862 slugging average as the Pelicans had a solid 6-1 week, including a four-game sweep of first-place Fort Worth. The Barranquilla, Colombia, native was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in the Pelicans' 9-7 victory over the Cats on Thursday. Rocha is currently second in the Central League with 11 home runs and fourth with 42 RBI, as the Pelicans finished the first half in second place with a 28-18 record.
The 31-year-old was drafted by Kansas City in the 1994 draft out of Cerritos (Calif.) JC and spent parts of five seasons in the Royals organization, reaching as high as Class A Wilmington in 1998. Now in his eighth season of independent baseball, Rocha has spent time in the Atlantic League with Somerset, Bridgeport and Atlantic City; the Western League with Sonoma County; and the Central League with San Angelo, Shreveport and Pensacola. Last season, he split time between San Angelo and Shreveport and smacked a league-leading 20 home runs, hitting .311 with 72 RBI.
Wiedmeyer dominated El Paso in a complete-game outing on Monday, limiting the Diablos to one run on three hits and striking out 11 in the Colts' 3-1 victory. He had another solid outing on Saturday, giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings of work, striking out eight, as San Angelo defeated Edinburg 9-3, helping the Colts to a 4-1 week. The West Bend, Wisc., native is now 5-5 with a 5.59 ERA and has walked just 14 batters in 67.2 innings pitched.
A sixth-round pick of San Diego in the 2001 draft out of Memphis, Wiedmeyer, 26, spent parts of four seasons in the Padres organization. Last year, he split time between Class-A Lake Elsinore and Mid-Missouri of the independent Frontier League.
