Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release
Last Week's Record: 1-1-0 Overall Season Record: 5-1-0
Game Recap- Friday, September 21st @ Soo Eagles. 4-2 Loss.
Sault Saint Marie, MI- Even after outshooting their opponent, the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings couldn't overcome the first period attack of the Soo Eagles, as the Eagles tallied three goals in the opening frame on their way to a 4-2 victory on Friday night in Sault Saint Marie.
Just 2:41 into the first period, Kalamazoo found themselves behind early. The Eagles got some traffic in front of Jr. K-Wing goalie, Alex Okicki, and were able to put in a rebound opportunity. Scoring the goal was Gavin Burbach, his first of the young season.
To add to their one goal lead, the Eagles got themselves another tally at the mid-way point of the first period. 10:01 into the first frame, defenseman Michael Lant saw the puck trickle to his stick at the blue line, where he promptly took a wrister that beat Okicki and ended up in the back of the goal.
Kalamazoo would respond quickly, as it was Luc Boby creating a breakaway, just over two minutes after the Lant goal. Boby got behind the defense, and crept in all alone on Soo goalie, Tyler Marble and made a nice move to his forehand to net his third of the campaign.
29 seconds later, the Eagles re-gained their two-goal lead. Eric Rivard was on the doorstep of the Kalamazoo goal and jammed home a loose puck to make the score 3-1 in the first period.
6:14 into the second period, it seemed as if Rivard would tally his second goal of the night and make the score 4-1. However, it was ruled that the puck went into the net by a kicking motion from Rivard, therefore negating the goal.
Trailing by two goals, and searching for momentum, Kalamazoo found themselves with a 5-on-3 power play with under a minute to play in the second period. Boby was able to score his second of the night, and fourth of the season, to pull the Jr. K-Wings to within a goal heading into the third period.
After a five goal outburst between the two teams in the first period, neither team was able to score for over 38 minutes. At the 18:14 mark of the third, the Eagle's Pat Gazzillo was able to bury a wrister to give his team a two goal lead, late in the contest.
On the losing end was Okicki, who's record now moves to 2-1-0, while the victory for the Eagles was their first in their North American Hockey League history.

Saturday, September 22nd @ Soo Eagles. 6-4 Win.
Sault Saint Marie, MI- The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings were led by Luc Boby, as he scored a hat trick, including his NAHL leading 7th goal of the season, as he lead his club to a 6-4 victory over the Soo Eagles on Saturday night in Sault Saint Marie.
Following the theme of the game between the two teams in the night before, the scoring was started early by the Soo Eagles. It only took them three minutes and 47 seconds of action for them to net the opening goal. Denver Pierce was able to tally the first goal of his NAHL career to make the score 1-0 early.
Just 13 seconds later, off the ensuing faceoff, Kalamazoo took the puck into the Soo zone, and Sean Campbell went down and notched his first of the season to tie the game at one.
Four minutes later, the Eagles' Roman Pfennings put in his first of the season to make the game 2-1.
With less than two minutes to play in the first period, the Eagles would register their third goal of the game. This time it was Alex Robert getting into the scoring mix with a wrist shot from the right-side point.
A minute and 28 seconds later, Kalamazoo's Boby took a sharp angle wrist shot from the left wing that beat Soo goalie, and former Jr. K-Wing, Zack Naagelvoort. The goal for Boby was his third in two games, and fifth on the season.
At the end of the first, Kalamazoo's starting goalie, Nick Stuart, was pulled in favor of Alex Okicki. Stuart had made 11 saves on fourteen first period shots.
A minute and 46 seconds into the second, Kalamazoo tied the contest on the second of the night, and team-leading sixth of the season by Boby. His breakaway tally early in the frame was his fourth marker in two games.
Half way through the final period, Boby capped off his hat trick with a wrist shot on a loose puck that was sitting in the slot area in front of Naagelvoort. The goal for Boby extended his team lead for goals with seven and put him in the lead amongst the entire NAHL.
Late in the period, the Jr. K-Wings took a two-goal lead on the second of the season by Taylor Burden. Burden entered the Soo zone and held the puck patiently, until he created space in between the circles to send it into the back of the goal.
Twenty seconds later, the Eagles pulled the game back within one when Mike Sabatini responded quickly with his first of the season.
Any attempt of a comeback by the Eagles was silenced with an empty net goal by Josh Dangel (3rd), who sealed the victory for the Jr. K-Wings with 35 seconds left.
