The Topeka RoadRunners clanged a shot off the crossbar a minute and a half into the game but it was as close as they'd come to scoring as Springfield crafted a 4-0 shutout win in Topeka on Saturday night.
The Jr. Blues got on the board at 10:18 of the first when Tyler Rehm slipped a backhander against the grain past Peter Traber for a 1-0 lead that stood at the end of 1. In the second period, Nick Hudeck (playing in his first game for the Jr. Blues) pounced on a Shayne McLaughlin clearing attempt and got in behind the 'Runners defense, burying a wrister for the 2-0 lead at 3:52. Springfield then needed only :07 seconds to cash in on their second power play of the game at 4:22 as Kevin Walters blasted a shot from the midpoint following a clean faceoff win, his first goal of the year. Springfield led 3-0 after 2. In the final period, Topeka picked up the pressure but the only goal was scored by the Jr. Blues as Mike Williams knocked home the loose puck in a net front scramble at 7:21 for the final 4-0 margin. Connor Girard stopped 21 RoadRunner shots, including a Ryan White breakaway, two solid attempts by Jake Lynes at the side of the net, and a sprawling save to deny Brian Christie who had been set up nicely by Kyle Sharkey from behind the net.
Topeka (14-8-2) wraps up their six game homestand this weekend with Amarillo (18-3-2). The Bulls have won 3 of the 4 meetings between the two clubs.
