Lincoln Stars News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Lincoln Stars have named forward Josiah Slavin team captain for the 2018-19 season, the team announced today. This marks the first time the Stars have named a captain this early before the start of a season.
Slavin, 19, had a breakout season with the Stars in 2017-18, tallying 23 goals and 19 assists for 42 points with four game-winning goals, one power play goal and four shorthanded goals. He led the Stars in goals and shorthanded goals and finished second in scoring during his second season in the USHL. The 6-foot-2, 182-pound forward was acquired by the Stars on Oct. 4, 2017 from the Tri-City Storm, where he totaled 14 points through 49 games in his debut season.
The Erie, Colo. native gained increased attention during the second half of the season through his point production, but his impact off the ice came from the time he arrived in Lincoln. Slavin has been a consistent, calming presence in the locker room while representing the team's culture in the community, putting philanthropy and others before himself while letting his inner moral compass guide his personal growth.
"We are happy to name Josiah captain for this upcoming season," said Stars head coach Cody Chupp. "Josiah is an impressive young man with all of the necessary qualities to be a great leader. He has been an incredible ambassador of the Stars organization during his time in Lincoln. We look forward to working with him, along with the rest of our leadership group, to continue to drive the culture of the Lincoln Stars."
"It's definitely an honor to be wearing [the 'C']," said Slavin. "This is a great organization and was definitely the best thing for me to be traded here early on in the season last year. I hope I can lead this group into a good season."
Experience has gone a long way for Slavin over his first two seasons in the USHL, and his lessons both on and off the ice have guided the Colorado College commit's leadership qualities in that time.
"I've been in this league for two years now, and I've had some great captains like Dominick Mersch show me the way. We're a hard-working group, and that's the way I'm going to lead is through work ethic. I hope the younger guys take note of that and do the same. I'm excited to create a brotherhood and have a close group of guys like we did last year."
The three alternate captain positions will be named prior to the start of the 2018-19 season. The Stars will submit their 30-player protected list and 18-player affiliate list by July 9.
