Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
The Saint John Sea Dogs (41-17-1-3) finished their road trip with a win over the Cape Breton Eagles (13-41-4-3) on Sunday. Josh Lawrence passed the franchise record for most assists in a single season by a Sea Dog with one assist in the game, passing Jonathan Huberdeau with his 63rd assist of the season. Goals came from Charlie DesRoches, William Dufour, William Villeneuve, and Ryan Francis in the 5-1 win.
Nikolas Hurtubise got the start for Saint John, making 22 saves on 23 shots in the win. Nicolas Ruccia faced 35 Sea Dogs shots and made 30 saves.
It was a quick first period with minimal whistles aside from one penalty at 13:18to Sea Dog Vincent Despont for interference, which was killed successfully.
The game remained scoreless until 17:39, when Charlie DesRoches sent a shot through the crowd in front of the net and past Eagles netminder Nicolas Ruccia.
Shots after the first were 9-8 for Saint John.
A tripping call against Eagles top scorer Ivan Ivan at 1:44 sent the Sea Dogs to an early power play, and William Dufour hit the back of the net 30 seconds later for his 52nd of the season.
Forty seconds after that, William Villeneuve scored one of his own from the blue line to make it a three goal game.
Former Sea Dog Nicholas Girouard scored at 4:59, breaking the Sea Dogs shutout and bringing the Eagles within two.
A high sticking call against Sean Larochelle at 15:09 gave the Sea Dogs another power play opportunity and this time it was Ryan Francis who scored. Josh Lawrence got the assist on the power play goal, and a Sea Dogs record held by Jonathan Huberdeau was broken, the second in as many games. Lawrence now holds the Sea Dogs franchise record for most assists in a single season with 63.
Shots after the second were 21-18 for Saint John.
Penalties to each team gave both power plays opportunities in the third period, Hunter Gartley for hooking at 2:55 and Jacob Squires for too many players on the ice at 5:33, but both were successfully killed.
A high sticking call against Hunter Gartley at 8:27 was followed quickly by a high sticking call against Carter McCluskey eleven seconds later, sending play to an extended 4-on-4.
With 3:12 remaining in the third, a slashing call against Conor Shortall put the Sea Dogs back on the power play late and Ryan Francis was able to score his second power play goal of the afternoon, giving the Sea Dogs the win with a final score of 5-1.
Final shots were 35-23 for Saint John.
