Daytona Beach, Fla. - The Florida State League announced on Monday that Jorge Ortega was named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week for the Period of June 15-21.
Ortega tossed a complete game shutout against the Jupiter Hammerheads on June 15. In nine innings, he allowed just four hits in a 4-0 Brevard County victory. He did not walk a batter and struck out two. It was the first complete game shutout by a Brevard County pitcher in 2015.
Ortega has the third lowest ERA in the FSL at 1.78 (15 ER/76.0 IP). He leads the league with four complete games and with a 0.82 WHIP. Ortega also leads the FSL with 76.0 innings pitched. He has walked just five men in 2015. He has allowed just three walks in the past 70 innings. He hasn't walked a batter in the past 37 innings. He ranks first in the FSL in lowest BB/9 IP ratio (0.63) and fewest baserunners/9 IP ratio (7.61). Opponents are batting .202 against the righty on the season, which is the third-lowest batting average against in the league. He started the FSL All-Star Game on Saturday and pitched a scoreless first inning. Ortega was signed by the Brewers as a non-drafted free agent out of Venezuela in 2011.
