Salem, VA - Mike Jones hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to hand Salem a 6-4 win over Winston-Salem on Friday night at Lewis-Gale Field. The victory capped off a first round sweep of the Southern Division Championship Series by Salem, who advances to play the winner of the Wilmington/Lynchburg series for the Carolina League Championship.
The Dash, who won the first half title and finished tied for first place in the second half, finished the season 73-67.
Seth Loman gave Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead to start the second inning when he launched the first pitch he received from Seth Garrison over the right field wall. It was the 24th home run of the season for Loman, who hit 15 with Winston-Salem and eight with Low-A Kannapolis to begin the year.
The Red Sox took advantage of a miscue to even the score at one in the bottom of the third inning. Jon Hee and Anthony Rizzo connected on back-to-back single with one out against Jacob Rasner. With a full-count on Brad Correll, the runners attempted a double-steal as Correll struck out swinging. With nobody covering the base at third, the throw by catcher Adam Ricks sailed into left field and allowed Hee to score.
Garrison was solid in his six innings of work as he limited the Dash to a run on five hits with five strikeouts, but did not figure in the decision. Once Garrison departed the contest after the sixth inning, the Dash took advantage of the Red Sox bullpen. Jason Rice walked Logan Johnson and Adam Ricks to lead off the frame and Tyler Kuhn advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Rice stumbled during his next delivery and was called for a balk, which allowed Johnson to score to put the Dash in front. Dale Mollenhauer and Greg Paiml followed with consecutive run-scoring hits to give Winston-Salem a 4-1 lead.
Salem bounced back in the bottom of the inning once Dash starting pitcher Jacob Rasner was lifted from the game. Ryan Dent lined an RBI double off Nate Jones and Che-Hsuan Lin collected an RBI ground out to bring the Red Sox within a run. Hee, who finished with three hits, lined a two-out run-scoring single into center field that knotted the score at four.
Coming off one of his worst start of the season, Rasner tossed 6.1 strong innings and held Salem to two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. He left with a 4-1 lead, but did not collect a decision. Hector Santiago allowed the game-winning home run and suffered the loss.
