Johnstown Capitalizes on Penalty Shot to Win 2-1

December 30, 2012 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release

Johnstown, PA - Sunday night's game between these two Northern Division teams was tied for the majority of the contest, but Johnstown was able to grab the lead for good with just five seconds to go, earning the victory over Kalamazoo by the score of 2-1.

In the first period, neither team was able to capitalize on some scoring opportunities. Each team went into the locker room scoreless as Kalamazoo goalie Alex Okicki was credited with 8 saves, while Johnstown goalie Chris Truehl recorded 9 saves.

The second period was eerily similar to the first for about fourteen minutes, with missed opportunities and failed power plays, but that all changed at the 14:21 mark. The Tomahawks were able to capitalize on a power play and take a 1-0 lead off the quick slap shot by Jordan Watt (12th).

Johnstown's lead would last less than a minutes as Taylor Burden (9th) would put Kalamazoo on the scoreboard at the 15:05 mark, just 44 seconds after Watt's goal. Burden gathered his own rebound and was able to slip a backhander past Truehl to even the contest at one goal a piece. Burden's goal was assisted by Kyle Gattelaro and Robbie Payne.

The third period was as evenly matched as the previous two periods, and it appeared as though this game was destined to head into overtime. However, with just five seconds remaining in the game, the Tomahawks were granted a penalty shot after Jr. K-Wing defenseman Matt Wurst intentionally knocked the goal off of the moorings. Cody Gylling was able to put the puck past Okicki and into the back of the net, sealing the game for the Tomahawks.

Kalamazoo has had problems with Johnstown all year. They have now lost four of the five contests between the two squads.
