Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Former Maverick forward Ross Johnston and the New York Islanders agreed to a four-year deal, announced by the NHL club on Monday.
The team did not disclose financial details on the contract but Sportsnet's Chris Johnston reported that the agreement carries a $1 million Average Annual Value.
Johnston was the first Maverick to reach the NHL, making his debut on April 10, 2016 against the Philadelphia Flyers. He returned to the AHL for the 2016-17 season but returned to the Islanders this past season, posting six points (3g, 3a) in 24 games played and netted his first-career NHL goal on Jan. 25 against eventual Western Conference champion, Vegas.
The Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island native skated in 13 regular season games with the Mavericks during the Brabham Cup-winning 2015-16 season, tallying four goals and seven assists while accruing a plus-5 rating. He returned to Kansas City during the Kelly Cup playoffs, adding three goals and a helper in five games.
Johnston is one of four former Mavericks to reach the NHL, joined by Islanders teammate Tanner Fritz and netminders Maxime Lagace of the Vegas Golden Knights and Ville Husso of the St. Louis Blues.
Season tickets for the Mavericks' 2017-18 season remain on sale.
