Birmingham Barons News Release

Barons starter Erik Johnson (4-2, 2.15) dominated over 7.0 shutout innings Saturday night as the Barons picked up their second victory in a row over the Jacksonville Suns in front of 5,452 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Johnson and Suns starter Robert Morey (1-1, 3.59) traded zeroes over the first four innings of the game. The Barons broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth inning, loading the bases against Morey who walked Trayce Thompson to force in the first run. Andy Wilkins followed with a two-run single to give the Barons a 3-0 lead.

The three runs would be more than enough for Johnson who was dominant over the course of his outing, striking out seven and allowing just four hits over 7.0 shutout innings. Daniel Webb retired the final six batters of the game for his second save of the season.

The shutout was the first for the Barons since blanking the Tennessee Smokies on May 5th and their 6th shutout of the season. The Barons rank 2nd in the league in shutouts behind the Mississippi Braves, who lead the league with eight so far this season.

With the win, the Barons improved to a Southern League-best 30-18 while the Suns fell to 26-19. The Barons are the first team in the league to reach 30 wins this season. With Saturday's loss by the Tennessee Smokies against the Huntsville Stars, the Barons lead the Southern League North Division by 5.5 games with 22 games left in the first half.

The Barons will look to win the series tomorrow night as RHP Nick McCully (3-1, 3.67) takes the hill against RHP Bryan Evans (0-1, 21.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM CDT.
