Joes Finally Down Peanuts
June 26, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release
It took Anderson eight tries this season, but they finally defeated the South Georgia Peanuts and in dramatic fashion Tuesday. With Brandon Carter at first base in a tie game in the bottom of the ninth inning, Hector Borg attempted to bunt the Joes second baseman over. When Peanuts first baseman Brandon Woolard threw the ball into right field trying to retire Borg, Carter motored all the way around from first to score the game-winning run.
"I need to take a cold shower, I'm hot out here," Carter said immediately after his game-winning sprint.
Anderson (8-26) received a stellar starting effort from Pete Nickerson, making his professional debut and allowing one run in 5.2 innings, and good contributions from the offense, which scored in every inning but the second, fifth and seventh.
The Joes took a 4-2 lead into the eighth inning but it was in the top of the eighth when the game got most interesting.
After taking ball one in a 1-2 count, South Georgia (23-9) right fielder Doc Brooks got into an argument with home plate umpire Tom Height, which led to Brooks' impending ejection. To defend his player, Peanuts manager Wally Backman came out and argued with Height and fellow umpire Tyler Simpson. Backman was also ejected after kicking dirt on home plate.
He then left the field and headed to the Peanuts dugout, at which point he threw 22 bats and emptied a bucket of baseballs onto the third-base side of the field, with debris ranging from the third base bag to home plate. The Joes left the field momentarily while bat boys cleaned up the mess and action finally returned after Backman had been subdued and left.
Steve Butler came in to finish Brooks' at-bat and singled, later coming around to score in the inning.
Butler struck again in the top of the ninth with runners on second and third base, when he hit a two-run double off Joes closer Brandon Sheriff to tie the game at five.
But then Carter scored on the Woolard error, and the Joes survived in thrilling fashion, winning a game that lasted more than three hours.
For the Joes, Sheriff improved to 1-1 with the win. Peanuts closer Drew Shetrone dropped to 3-2 with the loss, his first as a member of South Georgia.
"The last five games, we've seen a change in our attitude and the way we're carrying ourselves," Carter said. "We've had a few player meetings and everybody's on the same page now. And even though we're down, we've been all fight, fight, fight."
