Redfish Fall as Juice Mount Comeback

Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Redfish looked to bounce back against the Bradenton Juice after nearly being part of South Coast League history as they sent Ricardo Gomez to the mound for his first start of the season. Gomez started off strong, but the Juice roared back to snatch one out from under Charlotte County's cast as the Redfish fell 7-5.

The Redfish made sure to not have a repeat performance as Millard Dawson led off with a single to leftfield. Josh Murray looped a single to center and the Redfish had runners on the corners. William Plaza, whose batting average is second in the South Coast League, ripped an RBI double over the outstretched glove of Al Corbeil, the Juice third baseman, and the Redfish were on the board, 1-0.

Gomez (0-1) cruised through first 3 innings against the Juice with 6 strikeouts, three of the looking variety. The Juice were only able to get 3 men on but Gomez left them all stranded. Gomez continued his stellar first start with 1-2-3 innings in the 4th and 5th and picked up his 7th and 8th strikeouts. The night didn't end as it started for Gomez as he allowed Julius Thames and Al Corbeil to reach base after he got the first out in the bottom of the 6th inning. Brandon Camardese came on in relief, walked the first batter he faced but came back with a strikeout and there were two down. Manager Cecil Fielder went to the bullpen again and brought in Justin Wichert to face pinch-hitter Noah Peery. Peery poked a 2 RBI single through the right side of the infield and the Juice took a 2-1 lead. Gomez finished the night with 5.1 innings and 2 ER on 2 hits. He struck out 8 and walked only 2.

Lavelle Morgan (4-2), who pitched with a lead for the first time, didn't let the Redfish stage a comeback as pitched 7.0 innings with 1 ER on 5 hits, 2 walks and 8 Ks of his own. The Juice surged ahead and seemingly took control of the game in the bottom of 7th inning as 11 batters came to the plate. From the time Camardese entered, the Redfish used three pitchers and allowed 5 runs, 3 ER, 4 hits, 3 BB and only 2 Ks in 1.1 innings. When the 7th inning was over, the Juice were up 7-1.

The Redfish added a run in the top of the 8th as Dawson came in to score as Plaza picked up his second RBI on the night with a single to right and the Redfish moved it to 7-2. Aaron Simmons came on to pinch-run for Plaza and the Redfish put two more runners on as pinch-hitter PJ Lehmann and Ramon Downing both walked. The Juice had to use 3 pitchers in the 8th inning before they could record the 3rd out as Mike Muscasto grounded out to second.

Tommy Sutton had another great night in relief for the Redfish as he threw 1.1 innings, including setting down three in a row in the bottom of the 8th after walking the leadoff batter. As the game entered the top of the 9th, fans and players alike knew that they couldn't count the Redfish out. Corece Lee, who was activated today and will also continue to serve as bullpen coach, roped a double to leftfield to try and spark a rally. With two outs, Jose Gutierrez walked and Josh Murray stepped to the plate and destroyed a Steve Alverson pitch over the light stick in left-field for a 3-run homerun to bring the Redfish within two at 7-5. The Redfish didn't come any closer as Alverson set down Simmons and the Redfish fell to the Juice.

The Redfish will look to snap their recent skid tomorrow night, June 27th, against the Bradenton Juice. Due to scheduling conflicts at the Bradenton Juice home facility, all of the remaining games of the Sunshine State Rivalry Series, presented by Fairchild Roofing, will be played at the Charlotte Sports Park with the Redfish and Juice alternating as the home and road team. The Redfish will send LHP Daniel Chaffardet to the hill to take on RHP Travis Kane. All Redfish games can be heard on 1070 AM WKII and online at www.redfishbaseball.com.
