Jets to Honor Gold Medal Special Olympian
February 11, 2016 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Janesville Jets News Release
Janesville, WI - The Janesville Jets, proud members of the North American Hockey League, will honor Olivia Quigley, a gold medal-winning sprinter from Brookfield, Wisconsin, on Special Olympics Night on Saturday, February 13th.
Quigley, 24, took gold in the 100-meter run at the World Games in California last summer with a time of 16.76 seconds. In February she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but postponed chemotherapy to compete in the World Games.
"My partners and I are incredibly proud to host a night where we can honor Olivia," said Jets founder and President Bill McCoshen. "Her story is one every athlete, every person, needs to hear. The Jets are strong supporters of Special Olympics of Wisconsin, and we're delighted Olivia can be a part of our tribute night this year."
Quigley received the Hometown Hero Award from the Wisconsin State Assembly at the State Capitol in September. The award "seeks to recognize individuals from around the state who give themselves to make a difference in our community," according to legislators cited in a Special Olympics of Wisconsin press release.
Quigley will perform the night's ceremonial puck drop before being recognized, in addition to dozens of other athletes from Janesville Area Special Olympics, during the second intermission.
