Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA-- The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes settled for a series split against the Lancaster JetHawks, losing 5-4 on Tuesday at LoanMart Field.
A three-run sixth inning against Josh Sborz gave the JetHawks the lead for good, as they upped their lead in the second half standings over the Quakes to three full games.
Dodgers major league rehabber Yimi Garcia pitched the first inning as he works his way back from a biceps injury. He allowed one earned run on one hit, and struck out one, topping out at 94 mph.
The JetHawks led off the scoring when Cal League All-Star Bobby Boyd started the game with a solo home run, his eighth of the season, to make it 1-0 after a half-inning of play.
Rancho Cucamonga struck for three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a couple long-balls. Edwin Rios clobbered a majestic two-run home run, and Joey Curletta popped a solo home run to make it 3-1. It was Rios' 14th home run of the season and Curletta's 12th.
Lancaster cut into the deficit in the third inning. Working against Sborz, Brian Muniz ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Drew Ferguson to make it 3-2.
The JetHawks came back in the sixth inning to grab the lead for good. Sborz struggled, as he walked Muniz to start the frame and Trent Woodward followed with a single. Brooks Marlow hit into a fielder's choice RBI to score Muniz to tie the game at 3-3. After a Jamie Ritchie sacrifice bunt, Sborz walked Keach Ballard to load the bases with one out. After Ferguson grounded into a force out at home, Boyd singled up the middle with two out, scoring two runs and giving Lancaster a 5-3 lead. That chased Sborz and Alex Burgos came on to get the final out in the sixth.
In the seventh inning, the Quakes came to within one run. After Erick Mejia singled and stole second base with two out, Brandon Trinkwon hit an RBI single to cut the JetHawks lead to 5-4.
In the eighth inning, the Quakes had runners on first and third with one out, but Devan Ahart grounded into a 4-3 double play, with Johan Mieses running right into the tag, failing to backtrack to allow Ahart to beat it out.
In the ninth, Rancho drew back-to-back walks against Ryan Deemes with two out, but the JetHawks made a pitching change, getting Kevin Comer to come on to face Rios, who fouled out to the catcher to end the game.
Trent Thornton (7-4) earned the win after allowing three earned runs on seven hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out nine. Andrew Thome and Deemes combined for 2.2 innings without allowing an earned run, while Comer earned his first save of the season by recording the final out in the ninth inning.
Sborz (7-4), who took over for Garcia in the second inning, was charged with the loss. He allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings. He walked four and struck out eight. Burgos tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and Jeff Malm threw a scoreless inning of work.
After an off-day on Wednesday, the Quakes head to Lake Elsinore to start a four-game series against the Storm. RHP Grant Holmes (7-3, 3.39 ERA) gets the call for the Quakes, while RHP Zech Lemond (2-4, 6.97). First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
