Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La.---AirHogs starter Jason Jennings and Captains starter Alex Kaminsky each threw complete games as Jennings (W, 10-2) tossed a three-hit shutout to give Grand Prairie the 4-0 win in the home finale in front of 1,583 at Fair Grounds Field Friday night.
Kaminsky (L, 7-3), the reigning American Association Pitcher of the Week, threw 137 pitches (88 strikes) in his first complete game of the year. He gave up four runs on a season-high 13 hits while walking two and striking out five. Jennings gave up just three hits and three walks while striking out eight and throwing 113 pitches (89 strikes). He allowed only one Shreveport-Bossier hitter to reach second base.
Jennings threw 22 innings against the Captains this season, allowing just 15 hits and three earned runs while going 2-0 in three starts.
The AirHogs held the Captains to just five runs in the four-game sweep, shutting out Shreveport-Bossier twice. The Captains bats went silent once Grand Prairie came in to town as the Captains had just scored 37 runs in four games against Ft. Worth in winning that series three games to one. The Captains were shutout for the ninth time this season and the fourth time at home.
Grand Prairie scored first in the top of the second. Cesar Nicolas led off the inning with a double, took third on John Alonso's fly out to center and scored on Joey Gomes' base hit to make it 1-0.
In the third, Nicolas' RBI base hit with two outs would score Guillermo Martinez with the game's second run. However, Nicolas was thrown out at second trying to advance with another runner at third and the Captains kept the score 2-0.
The AirHogs would add to the lead in the sixth. David Espinosa led off the inning with a walk followed by a Greg Porter double to put men on second and third. Nicolas' RBI base hit scored Espinosa. One batter later Alonso would knock Porter home with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 Grand Prairie.
The Captains best scoring chance came in the seventh when Palmer Karr Jr. led off the inning with a double. With one out, Brian Peterson drew a walk but Joe Urtuzuastegui grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. It was the only time the Captains had two men on base at the same time all night.
Mike Provencher went 1-for-3 in the loss, picking up a single in his final at bat to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. AirHogs third baseman Nicolas was the offensive star of the game, going 3-for-4 with a run, double and two RBIs.
The Captains have now dropped four in a row and are 44-52 on the season. They end the season at Fair Grounds Field with a record of 27-23. The AirHogs took 11 of 17 contests between the two clubs this year.
Shreveport-Bossier finishes out the 2011 season with four games at LaGrave Field against the Ft. Worth Cats starting Saturday, Aug. 27 at 7:05 p.m.
