New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Fisher Cats pitcher Chad Jenkins has become the latest member of the 2012 team to get the call to the Major Leagues. The Toronto Blue Jays purchased the contract of the right-hander on Sunday afternoon prior to the Jays game in Oakland. With an off-day today, Jenkins will be ready to make his major league debut when Toronto begins a series on Tuesday night in Tampa Bay.
At the time of his promotion, Jenkins was tied for the Fisher Cats lead in victories (five) and was likely to take over the team lead in innings pitched before he was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday against the Akron Aeros.
Jenkins joins the big league club with a 5-9 record, but was putting together one of his finest stretches with the Fisher Cats since joining the team midway through the 2011 championship season. In his last start on Sunday, July 29, Jenkins turned in season-highs with 7.1 innings and 6 strikeouts, allowing just one run against the Altoona Curve. In his last three starts, he pitched 20.1 innings, surrendering just five earned runs (2.21 ERA).
A resident of Canton, Ga., Jenkins made 36 total starts for the Fisher Cats, recording ten wins in 214.2 innings.
When Jenkins makes his major league debut with the Blue Jays he will be the 61st player to do so after playing for New Hampshire. He will be the ninth player in 2012, and the fifth to make the jump directly from Double-A this season. Pitchers Drew Hutchison, Evan Crawford, Sam Dyson, and Aaron Loup all advanced from Double-A to the big leagues during the 2012 season. Position players Adeiny Hechavarria, Anthony Gose, Moises Sierra, and Yan Gomes made their debuts after earning promotions from Triple-A Las Vegas.
The Fisher Cats return home on August 14 to begin a six-game homestand against Binghamton and Altoona. The opener is WMUR CHaD Night with 50% of all ticket sales benefiting the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock.
