North Adams SteepleCats News Release
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Just over halfway through the 2012 NECBL regular season, URI sophomore Jeff Roy has lived up to his preseason expectations as one of the best players to grace the New England region this past season.
But Friday, those accolades extended to not just New England, but the nation, as Roy -- the 2012 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year -- was named an honorable mention on College Baseball Insider's 2012 All-America Team.
One of just 23 outfielders from around the country recognized Roy finished the season with a team-best 84 hits and 59 runs while leading the A-10 with a .421 average in conference games (40-95). He also reached base in an A-10 best 41 consecutive games in addition to leading the Rams with 23 infield singles (14 bunts), seven outfield assists, a .487 slugging percentage and a .443 on-base percentage
This summer, Roy continues to be a pure catalyst of the SteepleCat offense. The Cranston, R.I., native leads the squad with a .368 average (28-76) with a team-best 23 runs and nine doubles. The speedster has quickly ascended to the league leader board in stolen bases as well, going 17-for-18 in swiped bags through 20 games and now just needs two stolen bases to tie the single-season record set by John Schultz in 2009.
In addition to his latest recognition from College Baseball Insider, Roy has been tabbed to the NEIBA All-New England First Team and the ECAC Second Team.
