Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - Outfielder Yale Rosen went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, three RBI, a pair of walks and three runs scored to lead the Newport Gulls to a 12-3 victory over the Danbury Westerners at Cardines Field on Friday, July 6.

The Gulls racked up 12 runs on nine hits and drew a season-high 13 walks in their first meeting with the Westerners this season. Newport improves to 9-1 at Cardines Field and 16-5 overall this season with the win, while Danbury falls to 10-13 overall this season with the loss. Newport's victory, combined with New Bedford's 7-1 loss at home to Holyoke tonight, gives the Gulls a three and a half game lead in the Eastern Division.

Newport starter Ryan Halstead turned in six impressive innings in his first start of the season, picking up the win, improving to 2-1 overall this season, allowing just three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and just one walk.

"It was fun starting tonight," said Halstead. "We have to be ready for every game, we have to come out to play everyday, and play the best that we can."

Reliever Peter Kelich pitched two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit, while striking out five batters and closer Caleb Kellogg worked a one-two-three ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts to close out the Gulls victory.

David Gibson suffered his first loss of the season for Danbury, giving up seven runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout in just two innings, his shortest start of the season.

Newport's tenacious offense got to work in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs without the benefit of a hit. Danbury responded with three runs in the top of the second inning to tie the game up before the Gulls went on to score nine unanswered runs to secure the win.

Rosen jump-started the Gulls offense with a go-ahead two-run homer, his team-leading seventh home run of the season, in the second inning and third baseman Austin Slater delivered a two-out RBI single to right field to give Newport a 6-3 lead. Newport tacked on runs in the third and fourth innings before exploding for four runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

The Newport Gulls are on the road this weekend as they travel to North Adams on Saturday, July 7 and Mystic on Sunday, July 8. The Gulls will return to the City by the Sea this coming Monday, July 9 as they take on the North Adams SteepleCats at 6:35 p.m. For more information, check out www.facebook.com/newportgulls, follow us on Twitter @NewportGulls, or visit our website www.newportgulls.com.
