Jeff Andra spins 3-hitter in 7-0 win over New Jersey

LH Jeff Andra (10-6) spun a complete-game 3-hitter as the Pioneers won their 3rd straight with a 7-0 victory over the defending league champion New Jersey Jackals Saturday night at Dunn Field in front of 1033 fans. Andra carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and walked 1 and struck-out 7 in his 1st shutout of the season in his 3rd complete game. It was the Pioneers 8th shut-out of the season and their 10th complete-game.

Elmira bashed out 3 HR's on the contest from Michael Coleman (4th), Rafael Alvarez (12th) and Pedro Quero (11th). Brandon Pernell had a single and a double going 2-for-4 to stretch his hitting streak to 20 games. Ron Bush singled in the 7th to extend his streak to 10 straight.

The Pioneers have won 3 straight and 4 of their last 5 and are assured of staying at least a ½ game ahead of Adirondack in the Wildcard playoff race with 9 games remaining in the regular season.

Andra was coming off a Sunday loss at Adirondack in which he allowed 9er. He had won his previous 3 starts. 2 of NJ's hits came in the 6th inning when they came closest to scoring. Jack Lipari singled up the middle to lead off the 6th inning breaking up Andra's no-hit bid. He tried to score on a 1-out double to left-center by Craig Conway but CF Brandon Pernell played the ball cleanly off the wall and cut-off man SS Ron Bush fired a perfect throw home to Brian Jones to get the tag on Lipari.

Tmike Terhune singled off Jeremy Callier (5-3) in t5he 3rd and scored following an Osmani Garcia, Rolando Bello sac-bunt and Brandon Pernell rbi hit to CF.

Elmira increased their lead to 2-0 in the 4th inning on a Coleman solo blast to LF.

Alvarez hit one off the top of the scoreboard in the 6th to make the score 3-0.

Elmira rallied for 3 runs in the 7th sending Callier to the showrs. Garcia singled and was replaced by Bello on a fielder's choice. Pernell hit a 2-out double to deep right-center scoring Bello who had tolen 2nd. Ron Bush singled in Pernell and Rafael Alvarez doubled to left-center to drive in bush and give the Pioneers a 6-0 lead.

Pedro Quero's solo HR in the 8th off former Pioneer A.J. Brack accounted for Elmira's final run.

The Pioneers will try to extend their win streak to 4 straight Saturday night with Greg Keagle (8-9) looking to stretch a personal 3-game win streak. LH Mike Bertotti (12-4) starts for New Jersey.
