Only The Second Bear To Hit 30 In a Season

Newark, NJ – Friday, August 23, 2002 – The Newark Bears won their third straight game this evening as Jimmy Hurst became just the second player in Newark Bears history to hit 30 homeruns in a single season as he went deep twice in the 6-2 win. Newark starter and Levittown, NY native Kevin Perrucci (1-1) earned his first win in a strong eight inning effort.

The Pride got on the board and took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Bryan Jones reached on a fielder's choice and scored Glenn Murray. Newark answered right back in the bottom of the second when Jay LaFlair singled to Al Drumheller to drive in PJ Williams.

In the fourth Newark went on top 2-1 when Ryan Minor singled to right field and scored Wil Quintana. Hurst came up with his 29th homerun of the season to lead off the fifth inning, extending Newark's lead to 3-1.

Pride starter Drumheller (5-10) departed after the fifth and received the loss for allowing three runs on seven hits and five walks. The Bears added another solo run in the bottom of the sixth on a Jack Rexrode single to right field, and Hurst's 30th blast of the season in the eighth was a two run shot that made it a 6-1 ball game.

After eight innings, Perrucci departed and had allowed just the one run on four hits while picking up two strikeouts. He was relieved by Denny Bair, who allowed a run on three hits and a walk in the top of the ninth.

The only other Bear to hit more than 30 homeruns in a single season was Ozzie Canseco, who delivered 48 shots in the 2000 season. Hurst's 30 homeruns marks the lead in the Atlantic League, as the Triple Crown Candidate also leads in Batting Average and RBI.
