Jaxx, Stars split

(Huntsville, AL) August 27th- Sunday evening the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx and Huntsville Stars split a doubleheader with the Diamond Jaxx winning game one 2-1 and the Stars winning the nightcap 4-0. With the split, Huntsville is three games ahead of Chattanooga and Tennessee and eight games ahead of the Diamond Jaxx with eight games left in the second half of the Southern League season.

In the opener, Travis Chick allowed an unearned run on two hits over five innings to lead the Diamond Jaxx to the win. Chick (6-6) walked one and struckout three. Brodie Downs pitched the final two innings to nail down his second save of the season. Jeff Frazier and Luis Oliveros drove in a run each to lead the Diamond Jaxx offense.

Corey Thurman (4-8) suffered the tough luck loss, allowing two unearned runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts in six innings of work. Hernan Iribarren and Adam Heether had two hits each to pace the Stars five hit attack.

In the nightcap, Derek Miller and E.J. Shanks combined on a four hit shutout to lead the Stars to the win. Miller (6-2) went the first six innings, allowing just three hits while walking two and striking out six. Carlos Corporan had two hits and two RBI's to lead the Huntsville attack. Alcides Escobar chipped in with two hits.

Chris Jakubauskas (0-3) suffered the loss for the Diamond Jaxx. He allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Brent Johnson, Mike Wilson, Jeff Frazier and Erick Monzon had one hit each to pace the Diamond Jaxx four hit attack.

Game three of the five game series takes place on Monday night at 7:05 CDT. Right-hander Doug Fister (6-8 4.68) gets the start for the Diamond Jaxx. Huntsville will counter with lefty Lindsay Gulin (11-5 3.38).
