
Jaxx split one-run games on Saturday night with Biscuits

JACKSON, TENN. (JUNE 20, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (27-43) split a double-header with the Montgomery Biscuits (33-37) Saturday night at Pringles Park, in front of 5,396 fans. The Jaxx were on the wrong end of a 4-3 game in game one and took game two 2-1. The Biscuits take the series, three games to two over the Diamond Jaxx to end the first half of the season.
Game One:
The Biscuits took an early lead in game one of the double dip. Montgomery picked up back-to-back hits from Brandon Chaves and Fernando Cortez with one out. Then, DH Cesar Suarez drove in Chaves from third with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Jaxx responded in the bottom of the first. Colt Morton got his first Jaxx hit on a two-run homerun to left field, scoring Marshall Hubbard. The Jaxx connected for two singles in the inning, one from Gavin Dickey and the other from Marshall Hubbard. Dickey had to leave the game with an injury and was replaced by Leury Bonilla. Bonilla was thrown out at third on the single by Hubbard.
Diamond Jaxx starter, Justin Souza walked two and hit a batter in the top of the fourth. Jason Bowers walked with the bases loaded and Desmond Jennings picked up an RBI groundout giving the Biscuits a 3-2 lead. Souza lasted just four innings in game one, giving up two earned runs (three total) on four hits.
The Jaxx knotted the score at three each in the bottom of the seventh. Ezequiel Carrera knocked in Mel Stocker with a single tying the game. Stocker reached base on a single, then stole second to get in scoring position.
Phillippe Aumont (0-1), the 11th overall pick by Seattle Mariners made his Jaxx debut in the seventh inning. Aumont fielded a bunt but tossed an errant throw to first allowing Jennings to reach and move to second. Jennings stole second and scored the fourth run for the Biscuits on a groundout by Fernando Cortez.
Paul Phillips (2-0) earned the win for the Biscuits in game one going two scoreless innings of relief. Colt Morton led the Jaxx at the plate by going 2-for-3 with the two-run homer and a double.
Game Two:
A pitcher's duel ensued in game two of the double-header as starters Steven Shell for the Jaxx and Brian Baker for the Biscuits each gave their respective teams a chance to win.
The scoring began for Montgomery in the third. After two outs had been recorded, Desmond Jennings reached on a throwing error by Jaxx short stop, Oswaldo Navarro. Jennings stole second base and Brandon Chaves drove in Jennings from second with a base hit.
Steven Shell was lifted after five inning of work for the Jaxx. In his first start of the year he gives up one un-earned run on just two hits. Shell struck out six and walked none. Left-hander Nick Hill, making his first appearance since May 25th came on to strike out the side in the top of the sixth inning for the Jaxx.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Diamond Jaxx struck for two runs to take the lead. Yamid Haad singled with the bases loaded, plating Marshall Hubbard and Oswaldo Navarro walked with the bases juiced with two outs off of Eddie Morlan. Marshall Hubbard began the inning with a double, Colt Morton walked and Dave Espinosa was intestinally passed to load the bases. Mike Wlodarczyk (0-2) lost the decision and was responsible for the two runs in the sixth.
Ricky Orta (S, 1) closed it down in order in the ninth to secure the Jaxx victory. The Jaxx now lead the season series over Montgomery 6 to 4.
The Jaxx have a day off on Sunday and will begin a six game series against the Mobile BayBears in Mobile on Monday night. RHP Steve Bray (1-4, 3.35) goes for the Jaxx and RHP Matt Torra (5-6, 3.63) starts for Mobile. This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season.
