Portland Lumberjax News Release

The LumberJax (8-5) face off against the Stealth (5-7) in San Jose tomorrow at 7:30p. Portland has won the previous two meetings between the teams; once in San Jose (15-8) and once in Portland (11-10). Coming into this match-up, Peter Morgan and Brodie Merrill have become the leading scorers for the Jax with 42 points each. San Jose is 3-3 at home and lost their previous game to Calgary 12-10. It was announced today that Brodie Merrill also won Rookie of the Month for March, after receiving Overall Player and Rookie of the Week Awards for Week #14 earlier this week.

Portland comes into this game after clinching a playoff spot last weekend after back-to-back wins against Edmonton, but they are still in contention for home turf advantage in the playoffs. The Stealth have scoring threats in Jeff Zwicki (42 pts, 25g, 17a) and Derek Malawsky (39 pts, 17g, 22a), and they are hoping to break a three-game losing streak.

Merrill earns Rookie of the Month honors after leading the LumberJax to a 4-2 record during March. Portland's four wins during March were all over divisional opponents. In six games Merrill totaled 20 points on eight goals and 12 assists, and collected 82 loose balls. The Georgetown University graduate also scored two short-handed goals during the month. This is his second Rookie of the Month award this season; he also won in February.

Merrill leads all defenseman in loose balls (184) and points (42) and is second in goals (16) and assists (26). He is also only 16 loose balls behind the league's loose ball leader Toronto's Jim Veltman (200), who has played one additional game.

Portland is currently tied for first place with Colorado (8-5) and Calgary (8-5) in the West Division. The LumberJax are the only team in the Western Division and one of only two teams in the NLL (Buffalo - Home 4-2, Away 5-2) with a winning record both at home (4-3) and on the road (4-2).
