Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY - Jan Jas' third period goal broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Flint Generals a 2-1 win over the Elmira Jackals Friday night at First Arena in the first game of their 3-game weekend series.
The Jackals doubled up the Generals in shots on goal in the first period 12-to-6, but neither team created many high-quality scoring chances in a lackluster opening twenty minutes.
Flint's Shawn Snider opened the scoring as he knocked in a short-handed goal at 11:10 of the 2nd period as he walked around the Elmira defense and beat goaltender Dave Lemanowicz for an unassisted goal. But two minutes later the Jackals drew level on their next power play when captain Brent Cullaton, playing in his first game back from injury, blazed in a shot from the point for a power play goal at 13:13, assisted by Eric Anderson and Scott Wray.
The third period was dominated by the Jackals offense and Flint's goaltender. Elmira bombarded the Generals net looking for the go ahead goal, while Bryan Worosz turned aside everything that was thrown at him. Against the run of play Jan Jas picked up a rebound from a Gerard Miller shot and scored at 10:14, assisted by Snider and Miller, giving Flint a 2-1 lead. The Jackals continued to throw shots at Worosz, who had an answer for everything Elmira could first on goal. Elmira out-shot Flint 14-6 in the final period, but the Generals rookie goalie was perfect in the third to earn the victory.
Bryan Worosz made 35 saves on 36 shots as he picked up his 7th win of the season as Flint improves to 16-22-3 on the season and leapfrogs ahead of the Jackals in the Eastern Conference standing. Dave Lemanowicz put in a strong performance, stopping 20-of-22 shots in the loss; Elmira drops to 17-18-0.
The Jackals and Generals will engage in round two on Saturday night at 7:35 pm at First Arena. Sunday Elmira and Flint complete their 3-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 4:05 pm.
